PS5 HDMI Port Repair in Windsor — What It Costs and When It’s Worth It

Your PS5 powers on. The fan spins. The light comes on. And the TV says No Signal.

Most people assume the console is dead. It usually isn’t. Nine times out of ten in our shop, the console is completely fine — the problem is a single connector on the mainboard about the size of a stick of gum.

Why HDMI ports fail on the PS5

The HDMI port is soldered directly to the PS5’s mainboard. There’s no cable, no module, no connector you can unplug and swap. It’s one piece of metal fused to a very expensive circuit board.

That design is fine until something puts sideways force on the cable. The usual culprits:

• The console gets knocked over while the HDMI cable is plugged in. The cable acts like a lever and cracks the solder joints under the port.
• Someone trips on the cable or the console gets pulled off a shelf.
• The cable gets yanked out at an angle repeatedly over a few years.
• Moving the console without unplugging first — the port takes the strain.

You’ll often see no visible damage at all. The port looks fine. The pins inside are just no longer connected to the board.

How to tell it’s the port and not the console

Before you bring it in, rule out the easy stuff. It takes five minutes:

1. Try a different HDMI cable. Cables fail more often than people expect.
2. Try a different port on the TV, and ideally a different TV entirely.
3. Check the port with a flashlight. Look for bent pins, a plastic tongue that sits crooked, or metal that looks pushed in.
4. Wiggle test — if the picture flickers in and out when you move the cable, that’s a failing port, not a failing console.

If the console still shows no signal on a known-good cable and a known-good TV, it’s almost certainly the port.

One thing that rules it out: if the console doesn’t power on at all, or beeps and shuts off, that’s a different problem — power supply or mainboard. The HDMI port only affects picture, not power.

What the repair actually looks like

This isn’t a parts swap. It’s micro-soldering.

The damaged port has to be desoldered from the mainboard without lifting the pads underneath — the copper contacts it sits on are thinner than a sheet of paper. Then the board gets cleaned, a new reinforced port is aligned under a microscope, and each connection is reflowed and inspected.

Get it wrong and you don’t have a console with a broken port anymore. You have a console with a destroyed mainboard.

That’s why most repair shops won’t touch this job. It needs a microscope, hot air, the right flux, and a lot of hours behind the bench before you’d want someone doing it to a customer’s console.

What it costs — and what the alternative costs

Here’s the maths that makes this an easy decision.

Replacing the console (Canadian retail, as of April 2026):

That’s about a sixth of what a new disc-drive PS5 costs. And you keep your drive, your saves, your installed games, and your controllers pairing the way they already do.

Sony’s own answer to a broken HDMI port, if your console is out of warranty, is generally a flat-rate replacement or refurbishment fee — and you get back a different console than the one you sent in.

Repair or replace? A simple test

We give people the same honest test we use for laptops:

• Is the console otherwise healthy? Does it power on, run games, connect to WiFi? If yes, repair.
• Is this the only thing wrong? One fault is a repair. Three faults stacking up is a replacement conversation.
• Does age matter here? Less than you’d think. A launch-window PS5 is nearly six years old now, but unlike a laptop, a console that still runs current games hasn’t aged out of usefulness.

If the console is fine apart from the port, replacing it means throwing away a working machine over one connector. That’s not a good trade at $819.99.

What about Xbox, PC, and other consoles?

Same repair, same principle. HDMI ports fail on:

• Xbox Series X and Series S — same soldered-to-board design, same failure mode
• Nintendo Switch dock — usually the dock, not the console, which is a much cheaper fix
• Laptops and desktop graphics cards — less common but very repairable
• PS4 and Xbox One — extremely common at this point, given their age

Questions worth asking any shop before you hand over a console

Board-level work is where the gap between shops is widest. Ask:

• Do you do the soldering in-house, or send it out? Sending it out adds a week and a markup.
• Do you work under a microscope? If the answer is no, walk away.
• Do you test at 4K and high refresh rate afterward? A port can pass 1080p and fail 4K120 if it’s not seated properly.
• What’s the warranty on the repair? Ours is 90 days.
• What happens if the repair fails? You should not be paying for a failed attempt.
