Do this first

• Power it off and leave it off.
• Dry the outside and the ports.
• Remove the SIM tray to help it vent.
• Keep it upright and get it to us as soon as you can.

Do not do this

• Do not plug it in or try to charge it. Current plus moisture is what turns a recoverable phone into a dead one. This is the single most common reason a phone we could have saved arrives unsaveable.
• Do not turn it on to check if it works. Same reason.
• Do not put it in rice. Rice does not draw moisture out of a sealed phone. It does push starch and dust into the ports while corrosion continues on the board.
• Do not use a hairdryer or heat. Heat drives liquid further in and can damage the battery and adhesives.

Why liquid damage keeps working, then stops

Water rarely kills a phone instantly. What kills it is corrosion. Tap water, lake water, coffee and soda all leave minerals and sugars behind on the circuit board, and those residues conduct and corrode over hours and days. A phone that seems fine on Monday can fail on Thursday. That is why we treat a phone that still works after a spill as urgent, not resolved.

What we actually do

We open the device, disconnect the battery to stop current flowing, and inspect the board under magnification for corrosion and liquid indicator activation. The board is cleaned to remove residue, then dried, then inspected again. From there we test in stages — does it power, does it charge, does the display work, do the cameras and audio work. Some components are damaged beyond cleaning and need replacing; we quote you before we go further.

Being honest about the odds

Nobody can guarantee the recovery of a liquid-damaged phone, and you should be sceptical of anyone who does. Outcomes depend on what the liquid was, how long it sat, whether it was powered on afterwards, and which components it reached. Salt water and sugary drinks are considerably worse than clean water. We give you our honest assessment after we have opened it, and if we do not think it is worth your money we will tell you.
