When a cracked screen needs replacing

Not every crack is urgent, but some are. Glass versus display

This is the distinction that determines your price. On older and budget phones the outer glass and the display panel are separate layers, and sometimes only the glass needs replacing. On most modern smartphones — and on effectively all recent iPhones and Samsung Galaxy models — the glass, digitiser and OLED panel are fused into one assembly. Symptoms that are the screen, and symptoms that are not

Ghost touch, dead zones, lines across the display and black blotches are usually the panel. A completely black screen that still rings, vibrates and makes notification sounds is often the display or its connector. But a phone that shows nothing and does nothing may be a board or power fault rather than a screen — we test before recommending a part, because replacing a screen on a phone with a board fault helps nobody.
